Subsidy Removal: NLC Shuns FG, Begins Strike Today

The Nigeria Labour Congress yesterday boycotted the meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, to avert the two-day warning strike the organised labour begins today.

This is just as affiliate unions of the NLC, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, among others have, in a joint circular, directed all stakeholders in the aviation sector to comply with the NLC’s directive to join the strike.

Parties Optimistic As Tribunal Rules On Atiku, Obi’s Petitions Tomorrow

Interested parties in the February 25 presidential election have said they are optimistic of getting a favourable judgement as the Presidential Election Petitions Court fixed tomorrow to announce its verdict.

Presidential candidates of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi; and Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Chichi Ojei had filed the petitions challenging the declaration President Bola Tinubu as winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Breaking: NNPP expels Kwankwaso

The National Executive Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expelled Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, following his alleged refusal to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Committee.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Kwankwaso, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of NNPP, had been earlier suspended by the party’s leadership at the National Convention on August 29 in Lagos.

Recall that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NNPP set up a Disciplinary Committee and directed it to invite Kwankwaso to defend allegations of gross anti-party activities and mismanagement of party/campaign funds within five days.

100 days: Tinubu’s economic policies hurting Nigerians — Bode George

LAGOS— FORMER Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George, yesterday, took a swipe at the economic policies of the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government saying it is hurting Nigerians.

He also warned the judiciary not to allow it to be used to disrupt the electoral process as it delivers judgment on the Presidential Election Petition.

Speaking during a state-of-the-nation press conferece in Lagos, the elder statesman faulted the Federal Government’s method in the distribution of palliatives to Nigerians describing it as voodoo economics.

FG includes Widows, poor ex-military officers in social register

The Federal Government has disclosed plans to include widows, poor military who are poor in the social register, a a means of alleviating the plights.

Also, the government, through the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, has sought the collaboration of the Nigerian military in the management of humanitarian crises in the country.

Edu stated this during a courtesy visit on the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher G. Musa at the Defence Headquarters on Monday, in Abuja.

NDLEA intercepts ephedrine, skunk, laughing gas consignments at Lagos airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), has  intercepted various quantities of ephedrine, skunk and nitrous oxide, popularly known as laughing gas in Lagos .

The drugs were concealed in semovita packs and dry pepper being shipped to South Africa and Kenya through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport(MMIA), Ikeja, by members of Transnational Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTO), some of who were promptly arrested, their mansions raided and their luxury vehicles seized.

A statement by Director, Media & Advocacy,

NDLEA National Headquarters Abuja, Mr.  Femi Babafemi, noted that,” through credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives on Friday 25th August, intercepted a notorious drug trafficker, Suleiman Babatunde Oba, who is a member of a cartel distributing Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine and Ephedrine between Nigeria, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Mozambique, and Europe.

NITDA committed to youth empowerment through technology – Inuwa

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has emphasised the agency’s unwavering commitment to empowering the youths to shape Nigeria’s destiny through technology.

Inuwa said this during the closing ceremony of NITDA STEM Bootcamp for Kids organised by the Agency in collaboration with Future Map Foundation, which brought together enthusiastic students between the ages of 12 – 16 from various schools across Jigawa state.

He said, the 10-day training Programme held simultaneously in Rivers, Jigawa, and the FCT, is to nurture children’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, while exposing them to the endless possibilities that digital technology offers.

No need to go on strike now- says TUC

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Monday said as of today, there is no need for a nationwide strike over the removal of subsidy by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu led federal government.

Though they warned against a situation where TUC, its affiliates and allies would be compelled to confront the government, adding that government must do the needful.

A communique issued at the end of National Executive Council (NEC) meeting , the congress said government must intensify discussions with labour on parliatives and alternative.

Designer Of Nigeria’s Flag, Akinkunmi Was Iconic, Says FG

The minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris has described Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi as an iconic individual who designed one of the most important symbols of our collective existence as a country and a nation.

Idris stated this while speaking while on a condolence visit to the family of Pa Akinkunmi, at his Elebu, Ibadan, residence, yesterday.

The minister said the visit was at the behest of President Bola Tinubu, who wants to assure the family of the deceased and Oyo state that he shares in the pain caused by the death of the icon, adding that the late Akinkunmi represents the unity and oneness of the country through the legacy he left behind.

Why Nigeria’s Refineries Will Never Work – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the four oil refineries in Nigeria will never work.

The four refineries are located in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna states.

Obasanjo said the refineries will never work as long as the government continues to hold onto them.

The former president who stated this in an interview with The Cable Online Newspaper, said Shell Oil Development Company turned down his offer to them to run the refineries.

He disclosed that after much persuasion the managing director of Shell, at the time, listed four reasons why the oil company wouldn’t get involved in running Nigeria’s refineries, including  “too much corruption in refineries.”
